English Springer Spaniel

also known as Springer Spaniel

Pros History

The English Springer Spaniel is a breed that originated in England, specifically developed for hunting and flushing out game birds. The breed is believed to have developed from the spaniels of the 14th century, which were used to hunt and flush out game birds. Over time, these spaniels were bred to specifically excel at this task, becoming the English Springer Spaniel we know today.

The English Springer Spaniel is believed to have been developed by crossing the Norfolk or Shropshire Spaniels with the Welsh Springer Spaniel. They were used for hunting, specifically for flushing out game birds such as quail and pheasant, and were trained to find, flush and retrieve the game birds. They were also used as a general-purpose farm dog, used for herding and hunting small game.

In 1902, the English Springer Spaniel was recognized by the Kennel Club (UK) as a distinct breed and was grouped under the name of "Springer Spaniel". The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1910.

In the 20th century, the English Springer Spaniel was primarily used as a hunting dog, but they also gained popularity as a companion dog thanks to their friendly and outgoing nature. Nowadays, they are still highly valued for their versatility and are used in various roles such as hunting, as a companion dog, in search and rescue, therapy, and as a service dog.
