Parson Russell Terrier

also known as Jack Russell Terrier, Parson, Parson Jack Russell Terrier

Pros History

The Parson Russell Terrier is a small and energetic breed with a rich history dating back to the 1800s in the South of England. The breed was developed by Reverend John "The Sporting Parson" Russell, who had a passion for both his ministry and his hunting dogs. He aimed to create a breed that could work together with foxhounds in pursuit of the clever fox, both above and below the ground. The breed was named after him, as it was his vision and breeding program that created this unique terrier.

The Parson Russell Terrier, also known as the Jack Russell Terrier, has survived through several near-extinctions, including being overrun by other breeds such as the English Pointers and German Shorthaired Pointers in the 1800s. However, in 1894, the Devon and Somerset Badger Club was founded by Arthur Blake Heinemann, who created the first breed standard for this type of terrier. The club was formed with the aim of promoting badger digging, rather than fox hunting.

In 1983, the Parson Jack Russell Terrier Club (PJRTC) was reformed with the aim of seeking recognition from the Kennel Club. After several rejections, the Parson Jack Russell Terrier was recognized on January 9, 1990 as a variant of the Fox Terrier by the Kennel Club UK. The United Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1991, and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed as the Jack Russell Terrier on November 1, 1997.

On August 1, 1999, the PJRTC successfully petitioned the Kennel Club (UK) to change the name of the breed to the Parson Russell Terrier, with the name of the breed club following suit. The international kennel association, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, recognized the Parson Russell Terrier on June 4, 2001. The American Kennel Club updated the name of the recognized breed from Jack Russell Terrier on April 1, 2003. The United Kennel Club adopted the new name on April 23, 2008.

The Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC), New Zealand Kennel Club and United Kennel Club (UKC) are the only three major kennel clubs to recognize both the Jack Russell Terrier and the Parson Russell Terrier separately.

The Parson Russell Terrier is not just a hunting breed, they are also known for their loyalty and affection towards their owners, making them great companions. They are highly trainable, and excel in obedience and agility training. They are also known for their playful and energetic nature, making them great for families with children.
