Treeing Walker Coonhound

also known as TWC, Walker

Pros History

The Treeing Walker Coonhound is a breed of dog that was first developed in the United States in the 18th century. The breed is a descendant of the English Foxhound, and was developed by American hunters who were looking for a dog that could tree (chase an animal up a tree) and hold it there until the hunter arrived.

The breed was officially recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) in 1945 and the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 2012. The breed was named for its ability to tree game, particularly raccoons, and for its resemblance to the English Walker Foxhound.

The breed's origins can be traced back to the early 1700s, when English and American settlers in the Virginia colonies began breeding Foxhounds with other hunting dogs, such as the Bloodhound and the Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound. These early crosses produced a dog with excellent hunting instincts and the ability to tree game.

The Treeing Walker Coonhound is known for its keen sense of smell and its ability to track and tree game. They are also known for their energetic and playful personalities, making them great companions for active families. The breed is also used for hunting, tracking, and search and rescue.

One of the most interesting historical facts about the Treeing Walker Coonhound is that it was used by President George Washington to hunt raccoons on his estate. Washington was an avid hunter and kept a pack of Foxhounds at his home in Mount Vernon. It is believed that he used Treeing Walker Coonhounds to hunt raccoons on his property.
